Floods are extreme hydrological phenomena, of variable frequency, either natural or caused by human activity, which result in the submersion of usually dry land and may cause significant damage at social, economic, or environmental levels. They include floods caused by rivers, mountain torrents, and ephemeral Mediterranean watercourses, as well as coastal flooding by seawater.
The protection of people and property, by minimising the risks associated with floods, is an increasing concern considering the growing occurrence of episodes of intense rainfall and maritime agitation, associated with the effects of climate change. As such, flood management mechanisms are becoming ever more important, involving different entities.
How to prepare:
- Find out if you live or work in a flood risk zone.
- Prepare a family emergency plan: agree meeting points, emergency contacts, and evacuation routes.
- Consider taking out home and contents insurance if you live in a risk area.
- Prepare an emergency kit: torch, batteries, portable radio, essential medicines, drinking water, tinned food, mobile phone charger.
After a warning or during an event, follow the authorities’ instructions, prioritise your safety and your family, and document any damage for insurance and cleaning purposes.
